The building of Glynde National School began in 1841 and the school opened in February 1842, having cost £305 1s 5d to build and equip, the contract for building coming to £215 and a Miss Turner was paid £8 5s 6d for 'two months attendance to organise the school and salary, travelling expenses, board and lodging in the village, etc.'

The first known teacher at the school was Anna C Rose, daughter-in-law[?] of Rev Rose, vicar of Glynde, who left the school in 1844.

The first entry in the school logbook was made on 1 December 1862 when the schoolmistress Eliza Cox recorded that she had entered upon her duties 9 January 1857 and her assistant pupil was Emily Maria Cox, her sister. The Cox sisters left on the 13th December 1862 and Catherine Downing entered upon her duties as the new schoolmistress on 5 Jan 1863. On 5 January she noted that the reading in the 1st and 2nd classes was ‘good, except for accent’ and on the 22 January ‘the majority of the boys here are exceedingly rough and uncultivated. They look, speak and act as if they had been bought up in the woods far from the habitation of man’.
