Charles Webb was born in Glynde in 1889, one of at least eight children of George Thomas Webb and his wife Elizabeth. The father worked as a railway gatekeeper at Beddingham Level Crossing and the family were living in one of the railway cottages next to the crossing on the Glynde census returns for 1891, 1901 and 1911. Charles Webb had joined the Coldstream Guards by 1911 when he was stationed at Aldershot Barracks. He was involved in the Battle of Mons which he survived, and was later mentioned in Despatches. In the photo, taken with another Mons veteran, Charles is standing on the right.
