This house appears on the 1717 estate map and was one of the few houses in the village that the estate owned at that time. The house had been purchased by John Trevor, then owner of the Glynde estate for £50 in December 1682. The house was sold by John Symons of Beddingham, son and heir of William Symons of Glynde, blacksmith, deceased and comprised a messuageHouse or dwelling,
inc. outbuildings &
orchard, courtyard
or gardens
, barn, garden, orchard, 2 acres of land then in the occupation of James Vallance.

This house was the residence of the farmer who was tenant of the Great Farm at Glynde. By 1697 Vallance had vacated the property as the farm was leased that year to Thomas Attree for 5 years at £202 a year. Thomas Attree was the name of the man who drew the first map of Glynde in 1717. In 1719 John Kidder leased the premises for 18 years at £300 a year. Kidder purchased a few properties in the village and on one of these, in 1730, he built the house now known as Hampden House.

Richard Ellman of Hartfield agreed a 21 year lease with Richard Trevor, Bishop of Durham and owner of the estate, in 1761 at £420 a year. Ellman was succeeded to the farm by his son John Ellman, the celebrated agricultural improver best known for improving the Southdown sheep breed, in 1792. While he was tenant of the farm (and also steward of the Glynde estate) the estate extended the house in 1794 at a cost of £646 6s 11½. John Ellman was succeeded by his son, John Ellman the younger. John Ellman the younger quit the farm in 1846 moving to Landport Farm, near Lewes. Verrall and Son, Lewes, advertised his farm stock in the Sussex Weekly Advertiser, to be sold at auction.

The 1851 and 1861 censuses show Richard Woodman, farmer of 730 acres, living at the house with his family, but at Michaelmas (29 September) 1866 Henry Brand, the owner of the estate, took the farm in hand and it became known as Home Farm. In 1867 Henry Brand revived the tradition of the annual harvest home.

In 1871 and 1881 Thomas Colgate, described as a farmer and the agent to the estate lived there with his family. Colgate was replaced as agent by Tom Pickard who was living at Home Farm in 1891 but soon moved to Seven Acres (now called Ellinge). The house at Home Farm was then rented out separately and became known as Old Farm House.

One of the first tenants was Field Marshall Viscount Garnett Wolseley, retired head of the British Army. His daughter, Frances Garnet Wolseley, established some "Model Gardens" here in 1902 which were used for training "lady" gardeners before both she and the School for Lady Gardeners moved to Ragged Lands in 1905.

The Wolseleys were succeeded by Lord Islington and the house was later occupied by Admiral Currey between the wars. Mrs Young later lived there, followed by David, Lord Hampden, and his wife Imogen.
