Glyndebourne Farm House may have been the manor house of the manor of Bosses in Glynde and Ringmer. The property of Bosses, comprising 57 acres and 1 rod, was purchased on the 4 June 1577 by William Morley of Glynde, to add to his Glynde estate, from John Austen of Lewes, yeoman, and his wife Winifred for £300.

By 1671 the farm called the Bosses and lands in Glynde and Ringmer were in the occupation of Henry Alce at an annual rent of £30.

In 1731 the farm comprised 105 acres when it was leased for 7 years to William Als of Glyndebourne, yeoman, and a later William Als leased both Glyndebourne and Brigdens Farms in 1792 for 20 years at £180 a year.

The Als family, who had occupied the farm for at least 143 years, were replaced by John Ellman in 1814. His son John Ellman the younger took over the farm in 1829 and his bailiff, Edward French, was living at the house in 1841.

In 1873 Glyndebourne Farm, now of 465 acres, was leased to George Newington, John Clay Lucas and Caleb Rickman Kemp of Lewes, lime merchants at £580 a year. The three partners were also leasing the chalk pits in Glynde and Beddingham and Newington took up residence at Glyndebourne Farm.

In 1901 David Aylwin, aged 62, born in Hamsey, was the farmer and lived at the farmhouse with his unmarried Selina Aylwin, 34, and two female servants.

Clement A Bennett, agent to Brigadier-General Holdsworth, who was leasing Glynde Place, Home Farm and Glyndebourne, was the occupier in 1934. Bennett’s wife, Mrs De Le B Bennett, was a breeder of dogs. Edward Saunders was the occupier in 1950 and Richard Brickell had become the tenant by 1955.

On the retirement of Richard Brickell in the 1990s a radical change of farming practice took place when Mr O’Connor of Atlantic Alpacas became the tenant and stocked the farm with a breeding flock of alpacas, with some llamas and a camel.
