Spider Cottage and Downland Cottage: 1920-2010

This pair of cottages was built by East Sussex County Council, who obtained planning permission 14 May 1920. The left hand cottage (Downland) was the new village policeman’s house and the right hand cottage (Spider) was occupied by the local roadworker. The village policeman had previously lived at 2 Malthouse Cottages, Glynde.

The Holloway twins, two workers for the County Council, lived at Spider Cottage for many years with their mother and bought the house from the Council in the 1980s. Ray Foord, who had owned the local milkround and lived at Glyndebourne Farm Cottage, bought Downland when he retired about the same time.
