Extract from a letter from Nan[?] Lord to her brother Arthur F Lord, 'Northiam', Florida, Transvaal, South Africa, 11 May 1915 (ref ESRO/LRD 2/22/6/2)

My dear Arthur,

I enclose a recipe for curing bacon and hams. It is the one mother used to have, and you remember the lovely pink hams we had. Rosa's is quite different and I think beastly, and certainly we never have hams and bacon to equal the old days. I was too busy to send last week. I met Gladys in Town and we came here last Thursday week, and she left again last Friday. I am going to Glynde this week to join Lady Wolseley's College for Lady Gardeners, so please address 'c/o Mrs Elphick, Old Vicarage Cottages, Glynde, nr Lewes, Sussex', where I shall lodge. The fees are £20 and £6 extra for lectures for 1 year but I think it is worth it, as their connection is very large. A thing I could not build up for myself for many years, and here I shall step right in. I also am going to do some secretarial work for them which will bring in a little pay...

...I hope to launch out as a professional gardener - Lady W is inundated with applications, and the people pay well and give a cottage to live in. Of course there is still more demand for women now, owing to the men gone to the war.
